What is aromatherapy?

Through the power of scent, our emotional and spiritual bodies can be healed with essential oils. If you’ve never tried aromatherapy before, you truly are missing out!
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to associate certain smells (good or bad) with certain memories or feelings? Have you ever walked into a space that smelled delicious, beautiful, fresh, clean, etc., and your mood instantly changed? This is aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is the practice of using scent as a means of bettering our mental, spiritual, and physical health. It is often a core practice in the holistic lifestyle approach, and almost always involves using essential oils.
The part of the brain associated with the sense of smell is call the olfactory system. Aromas we inhale pass through the olfactory system and travel to the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls emotions, heart rate, moods, hormones, blood pressure, and memories (to name a few).
The connection between these two bodily systems explains why scent can trigger physical and emotional responses. Also, essential oils help to strengthen the body’s natural processes because of chemical similarities between the oils and ourselves. Pretty cool right?
Aromatherapy benefits
Aromatherapy has a place in every modern mystic’s sacred space! Scent is a powerful way to open up the chakras, raise our vibration, and heal the body, bringing us closer to our Higher Selves.
Aromatherapy is one of those magical things that seamlessly aligns with all your favorite spiritual practices. Why not mix and match?
Are you still on the fence about aromatherapy? Perhaps now is a good time to practice open-mindedness. There is no harm in trying something new, especially when it has the potential to heal your entire being.
No matter what you’re doing, you can fill your diffuser with essential oils that promote positive qualities. Maybe you enjoy a little rosemary while you work, or meditate with lavender surrounding you to promote relaxation.
Often, aromatherapy is used in conjunction with other spiritual activities such as yoga, journaling, crystal therapy, meditation, tarot readings, or cleansing rituals.
Scent has been regarded as divine for generations, and has been known to summon spirits, cleanse temples, and banish evil.

Peppermint is useful for increasing intuitive awareness in meditation, as well as being a powerful respiratory healer. Orange helps to stimulate creativity, which ultimately leads to a higher state of consciousness.
Lemon releases negativity from our mind and warms our hearts with joy. Sandalwood is well known for supporting intuition and destroying emotional blocks. And we are just getting started!
I used to be a little skeptical about essential oils, for no good reason really. A few bad and inaccurate articles I read on the internet definitely tainted my opinion.
But when I received a box of essential oils as a birthday gift, I decided to quit judging and start actually learning. And now I use essential oils all over my house and my life!
The Herbs and Essential Oils bundle really helped me on my quest for knowledge in the realm of aromatherapy.

What are essential oils used for?
Essential oils have a plethora of practical uses from aromatherapy, to beauty, healing, cleaning, and cooking. The idea is that the oils possess the healing properties of the plant it was extracted from. This creates a natural product that we can use to enhance our well being, instead of using other products that are more harmful than helpful.
People love essential oils because they smell delightful, bring lots of comfort, and are readily available. Healing the physical and mental bodies is effortless and instantaneous with essential oils.
Essential oils are the essence of the plant, herb, or root they are extracted from. Some form of steamed distillation is often used to separate the natural oil from the plant. This results in a highly concentrated essential oil that contains all the healing properties of that particular plant.
There are four simple ways to use essential oils: inhalation, diffusion, topical application, and ingestion. We often mix certain essential oils together when we want to promote certain properties or accomplish a specific goal. The combinations are truly endless!
Even if you’re skeptical about their healing properties, you can still enjoy their yummy scents and find practical ways to use essential oils in your home.

How to use a diffuser
Diffusers are little machines that turn water mixed with essential oils into perfumed vapor. Whenever I fill my diffuser, I let it run until the water is all gone.
You can get gorgeous diffusers that light up a rainbow of colors and look quite decorative. There are also these awesome car diffusers for those long commutes and road trips.
Perfect times for a diffuser: throughout your work day, during yoga/meditation, while reading, while you’re in the shower/tub, after cleaning, while you’re stuyding, while doing your favorite hobby, during spiritual ceremonies, as a compliment to your beauty routine, when you’re going to bed or snuggling on the couch.
One or two drops of an essential oil for every 100 milliliters of water is the general rule of thumb, but in my opinion, there is room to play here.
You can partake in aromatherapy just about anywhere, anytime. But being outside the home means you must take others into account. Some people have severe allergies to certain scents or plants, so we must be mindful if we take our essential oils with us someplace.
However, a quick whiff probably wont cause many problems. I do this all the time at work and no one’s ever complained. Just be sure to close the cap on the bottle quickly and tightly! But beware: people might ask for a sniff 😉

Are essential oils safe?
Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be dangerous if used improperly, or if they are poor quality. Unfortunately, there are no FDA regulations that control the essential oil market. As a result there are lots of crappy oils out there that aren’t nearly as safe as high quality oils.
Yes, essential oils are safe to use when they are high quality and you know how to use them. Once you have a solid foundation of knowledge it’ll be very easy for you to incorporate essential oils and aromatherapy into your every day life.
It’s important to consider the company selling/creating the oils when shopping for them. Just because the brand name is popular and well known doesn’t make it high quality.
As a general rule of thumb, extremely cheap essential oils (that might be mislabeled as “pure”) are not something you want to mess with.
You don’t need to break the bank to get high quality oils, but you should be ready to pay what they are worth. Like tattoos and alcohol, the cheap stuff is so God-awful that you’re better off just investing a bit of money for a better product from the start.
Absolutely anyone can benefit from essential oils! I have so much fun using them during meditation–they really enhance the experience.

Carrier oil vs. essential oil
Because essential oils are so highly concentrated, it is important to dilute the oil in a carrier oil. An essential oil is extracted from a plant and is extremely potent. A carrier oil comes from plants as well, however they are not nearly as potent and much more safe to use and consume on their own.
Carrier oils are vegetable oils (like coconut, olive, sweet almond, jojoba, or grape seed) that are meant to dilute essential oils before topical application.
Carrier oils allow the essential oil to be more evenly absorbed by the skin. You can use carrier oils without essential oils, but you shouldn’t use essential oils without a carrier oil.
In general, carrier oils can be purchased at most grocery stores in large containers for a fair price. Essential oils come in little bottles and often cost much more than carrier oils.
For diffusion, carrier oils are not usually necessary, but for topical application, carrier oils are a must. Very rarely should essential oils be applied neat, as they are rich in chemicals that can be harmful to sensitive skin.

Why not give aromatherapy a chance?
Essential oils work because they come from plants, which come from the Earth, which is made out of all the same elements we (humans) are made of.
The naturally occurring chemicals in our bodies can also be found in these extraordinary oils, which is why they work so well for healing us physically and emotionally. This is a similar concept to crystal healing.
Essential oils are a safe, fun, simple, and lovely way to enhance your physical health and spiritual well being!
Are you a person who is influenced by the fads, or are you serious about healing your mind, body, and spirit? Because there is so much more to aromatherapy than what initially meets the nose. Your diffuser can become your best friend, if you just give it a chance.
