Cleansing Stones in Sunlight
Cleansing crystals with the Sun is super easy. Simply leave them in a sunny spot for 10-20 minutes at a time. You could get away with 30 minutes depending on the crystal. But try not to go too much longer than that. Remember that the Sun can deplete energy just as easily as it can boost it.
Astrologically, the Sun represents our personalities and what we show to the world. It’s the central point of our solar system, as well as our natal charts. When we work with Sun energy, we get closer to the core of who we are and why we’re here.
The Sun makes us feel all happy and warm inside. It’s so full of strength and vitality. Taking a little Sun bath gives us a boost of energy and keeps us in good spirits!
Light colored crystals like amethyst, rose quartz, and fluorite will fade if they get overexposed. Their energy becomes less potent and vibrant as well.
This sort of damage is irreversible, which is why I stress the importance of short Sun baths for crystals.
Dense colored crystals like tiger’s eye, labradorite, and malachite are better suited for Sun cleansing. If you can’t see light shine through the crystal when you hold it up to the Sun, you probably won’t have to worry about color fading too much.
Still be aware of their energy, though. You still don’t want to overexpose these stones.
I think it’s best to avoid cleansing your crystals with the Sun at high noon. The heat is almost always too intense, even in the winter. Instead, consider cleansing your crystals during the sunrise and the sunset. Each one offers something energetically unique for you and your crystals!
Sun Cleansing Crystals
Crystals love basking in the Sun just like humans, plants, and animals do. However the sun rays can be just as harmful as they are healing.
Unlike the moon’s energy, the Sun’s energy and heat can cause physical damage us and our crystals. So it’s important to pay close attention when working with Sun energy.
The Sun is the bringer of life, and it can also be pretty detrimental to life. When it comes to the Sun, there definitely can be too much of a good thing. Humans and crystals have many things in common, and being sensitive to sunlight is one of them.
Cleansing Crystals with the Sunrise
I mentioned in my blog post about cleansing crystals with the moon that you want to be sure to remove your crystals from your window sill right before sunrise. But, what if you left it there on purpose?
Sunrise energy is incredibly inspiring. It brings a sense of a fresh start every single day. You can infuse your crystals and yourself with this energy by having a mindful moment in the morning.
When you go to cleanse your crystals overnight with the moon, make a plan to get up just before sunrise the next day. Take a few minutes to meditate while the Sun comes up over the horizon. Use that time to bond with your stones and be grateful for the new day. It’s a magical little ritual!
I do this often with my own crystals. Especially during the summertime when the Sun rises nice and early. Even if I can’t physically see the Sun waking up, I still love feeling its warm energy.
Cleansing Crystals with the Sunset
Sunset energy is very calming. It presents us with the opportunity to look within ourselves once the darkness takes over. Our stress melts away as we relax into the evening. I feel sunset energy is very beautiful and rejuvenating. It’s just as lively as the sunrise, but in a different way.
Cleansing crystals with the sunset is really simple to do if you already cleanse with moon energy. You can do everything you normally would with the sunrise, just reverse it. Easy peasy!
Make note of what time sunset is and gather your crystals a few minutes before. Lovingly lay them out on the window sill, ideally facing west. Meditate quietly nearby as the sky gets darker, and once you’re done simply leave your crystals there overnight.
You could take it a step further and meditate with your crystals again during the sunrise the next day. I’m sure all of you would feel very happy and grateful afterwards!
Why is the Sun so necessary, yet so deadly?
The Sun is incredibly powerful. It’s almost 93 million miles away from Earth and we still feel its heat. Without our atmosphere acting as a protective shield, we would get cooked. And yet, without the sun, there would be no life at all. Just darkness and ice.
Life as we know it hinges on the delicate balance between needing the Sun and being protected from the sun. We love it, and we fear it!
I personally struggle with Sun energy a lot. Especially during the summer. Feeling the warmth on my skin is really enjoyable. But the fear of cancerous sunburn is always in the back of my mind. Does that seem extreme? Perhaps, but I can’t help it.
There are many positive health benefits to sunlight. Including mood enhancement, improved sleep, and vitamin D. On the flip side, there are many negative effects of the Sun as well. Including damage to the eyes, heat stroke, and sadly cancer.
UV rays are what make the sunlight so dangerous. This is what we protect ourselves from with sunscreen and with our atmosphere. But it’s not all bad!
“The sun warms our seas, stirs our atmosphere, generates our weather patterns, and gives energy to the growing green plants that provide the food and oxygen for life on Earth.” **
Sunlight increases the amount of serotonin in our brains, which is linked to feelings of happiness. Not to mention the strong astrological associations with Sun energy and our personalities.
In short, the Sun provides us with the energy we need to thrive. At the same time, the Sun can cause a myriad of health problems for humans, crystals, animals, and plants alike. We need the sun–so it’s imperative that everyone know how to safely interact with it.
Learn from your own experiences
In this blog post, I share a lot of my personal experiences working with Sun energy. Those experiences have taught me that sunlight is something that demands respect. After losing a few crystals to Sun overexposure, I am always very cautious when working with sunlight.
But what have you experienced? Have you experienced anything yet? I felt compelled to share this knowledge with you in the hopes that you’ll learn from my mistakes. But I really encourage you to go out and find out first hand.
Of course I don’t want you to lose any crystals to sunburn. I just think it’s totally possible that you might have better luck with sunlight than me. And if that’s the case, please share with me in the comments below! Thank you so much for reading and sharing. I just love having this space online where we can learn from each other.
