The Lovers Tarot Card

Relationships, devotion, passion, connection, opposition, compromises

The Lovers Card Meaning

The Lovers is the sixth card in the major arcana of the traditional tarot deck. While romance is a prominent theme in this card, its messages apply to all the relationships you could ever have.

Any kind of communication and interaction two people can have between themselves shows up in this card. It represents the intimacy that can be shared, the risks we take in the name of love, and what it means to have a healthy relationship.

Think of sacrifices, kindnesses, frustrations, admirations, jealousies, fascinations, disagreements, commonalities, etc. To an extent, opposites attract. This keeps the curiosity and mysteries alive within a romance.

But this card does not stop at relationships. The Lovers represents a powerful and passionate devotion that will require a great deal of change within us.

These changes could manifest as compromises, letting our walls down, allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed, and accepting things/people just as they are.

A major theme in The Lovers tarot card is expanding your viewpoint in order to better understand someone else’s viewpoint. This level of intimacy takes strength. Vulnerability doesn’t always come easy, but it is imperative to make any relationship successful.

Fully devoting yourself to your love (or your purpose) is like diving headfirst into a pool of black water. You do not know how deep it will go or where you’ll end up. All you know is that you must fearlessly jump in because the alternative is extreme dissatisfaction.

The Lovers Card

In a reading, The Lovers could signal you to finally let things fall away so you can fully embrace your love and your calling. There might be an enormous risk in this love. It could totally backfire. Or it could turn into the most magnificent crescendo of passion and fulfillment you will ever experience.

If you’re truly dedicated, and you truly want this purpose to unfold, then the risks won’t matter, and you can welcome the consequences (good or bad). Having taken the leap and living with the results is so much better than never having lept at all.

Alternatively, The Lovers could indicate a challenge in a romantic relationship. Either establishing a connection, deepening a connection, or choosing between two unique connections with different people.

Two people are drawn to one another through divine grace and influence. Because all relationships we have serve a greater purpose. We arranged all the soul connections we will make during our lifetime before we were born.

Romance could also cause challenges in our lives. Not every problem related to a relationship occurs within the relationship. It could be a domino effect rippling out and affecting various things.

So far, The Lovers tarot card is the harshest card in the deck. As The Fool travels along their journey through the major arcana, they face a rude wake up call through the overwhelming devotion of The Lovers.

The Lovers represents a powerful and passionate devotion that will require a great deal of change within us. It represents the intimacy that can be shared, the risks we take in the name of love, and what it means to have a healthy relationship.

The Lovers Reversed

When The Lovers show up as reversed in a tarot reading, it’s likely highlighting disharmony and misalignments. The Lovers cannot operate if they’re not in alignment or harmonious with one another.

If there is a relationship where needs aren’t being met and there’s extreme dissatisfaction, The Lovers will show up to highlight the division between the two people.

The path of pure pleasure has the potential to distract from our spiritual and personal growth. The fantasy of everything being perfect and effortless without putting in any of the hard work. We cannot grow as people or grow closer together if we don’t put in the hard work.

The reader is likely caught in the middle of something mysterious. They don’t have all the information. And they might be reluctant to be vulnerable with other people. This is a major emotional roadblock that causes imbalances in our relationships.

The Lovers Tarot Meaning

The Lovers might seem to represent a wild, passionate romance looming in the future. And sometimes, that might be the case. But it’s much more likely that The Lovers are illustrating a different kind of devotion that requires your full attention.

This devotion will have an impact on your entire life, especially your relationships with others. If you stick together and stay dedicated, your passions will bring plenty of success and satisfaction.

The Lovers tarot card wants us to ask ourselves–how can I dedicate myself fully to my passions and safely accept the changes required of me to become the person I’m meant to be?
